Securing the future of older people’s housing

Abbeyfield Living Society (ALS) collaborated with Campbell Tickell on a unique webinar examining how to develop the housing need for older people, held on 18th March. Bringing together over 190 people from housing providers, Government agencies, local authorities, policymakers and leaders in the sector, the webinar, supported by Charity Bank, looked at the supply of providers, engagement with the government and other stakeholders, and catalysts for delivery.

ALS’ Head of Relationships and Development, Abdul A Ravat – also Chair of the National Housing Federation's Older Persons’ Housing Group – co-chaired the event alongside Campbell Tickell Director, Liz Zacharias.

The webinar drew up 15 ‘key asks’, seen as vital to securing the future of older people’s housing for an ageing population, which has been sent to Government ministers alongside participants’ call for a ‘National Older People’s Housing Strategy’.

Abdul said:

“The most salient point from the webinar and the accompanying briefing is that we need to stop talking about housing for older people and start thinking about ‘housing for an ageing population’.

"We are getting older as a society, which is also increasingly diverse, and need to think more widely about what that means in terms of how we organise our communities, social and public spaces, as well as our existing and new homes.

“We look forward to playing our part to increase the supply and number of providers engaged in delivering new affordable older persons’ housing and protect the existing stock and have requested to meet with Government and its agencies to deliver the step change needed”.
