Care, Community & New Experiences

Rene shares her experience of living at Speedwell Court, dementia-friendly care home in Southampton so far, where she continues to enjoy her favourite activities, build friendships, and participate in new experiences.

"I've been living at Speedwell Court for about five months now, but it feels like much longer—in the best possible way," says Rene.

Rene's journey to Speedwell Court began when her friend started seeking the perfect care home for her, one that would tend to her needs, allow her to build relationships and partake in activities.

After reading a brochure at her home in Lee-On-Solent, Rene was invited to visit the Southampton residence. "They didn't set a time for me to leave that day, and I'm still here!" she laughs. Her previous home had become too big to maintain on her own, and Rene was looking for a welcoming place, that felt like home. She found exactly that at Speedwell Court. "I love how peaceful it is here," she explains. "I don’t have to rush around, and I can join in with whatever I want."

The social atmosphere has also been a highlight. "They make a lovely cup of coffee," Rene says, "and I’ve made a number of friends at the coffee and cake mornings, which is something I always enjoyed."

Rene appreciates the personalised approach at Speedwell Court. "Everyone is treated as an individual," she said. "I've been able to retain my character and continue doing the things I love, like getting my hair and nails done. I feel very well cared for, and I have a great relationship with the staff."

The gardens were one of the first things that caught Rene's eye. "I noticed some areas that needed a bit of work," she recalls. From the start, she began tending to the flowerbeds daily. With the help of Sam, the Gardener (and Chef) at Speedwell Court, Rene's dahlias are thriving. "I do all the digging, and then tell him to clear it all up!" she jokes. She also enjoys working in Sam's kitchen garden allotment, most recently picking runner beans.

The staff at Speedwell Court have embraced Rene's passions, including her love for late american singer, Meat Loaf. "I used to go to a lot of tribute acts," she says. "Justine, one of the staff members, even gave me a Meat Loaf concert DVD. We had a private screening with popcorn in the cinema room—my friend and I were singing and dancing along!"

Rene also enjoys watching Formula 1, passionately cheering for Lewis Hamilton and expressing her strong opinions about other drivers. Regular dance activities are another favourite, and Rene playfully gets others involved.

"And the food? Lovely!" Rene declares. "They make a great roast dinner, which has always been a favourite, and the desserts are fabulous—always beautifully presented with a swirl of squirty cream."

Rene's story is just one example of the welcoming community at Speedwell Court, where residents are encouraged to live life to the fullest and pursue their passions, surrounded by support and friendship.
