When Helen moved to Westall House Independent Living, she wasn't sure what to expect. What she found was a welcoming community, a comfortable home, and companionship.

“My life before Westall House was a good one. Up North, I was always busy, involved in lots of clubs and loved fundraising for some of them. After my husband passed, I moved down to Sussex to be near my two daughters. We were looking for a bungalow, but they stumbled across Westall House. Honestly, I hadn't even considered anything like this before, but when I saw it was just so nice.

“One of my biggest worries before moving was, 'What if I need help?' Thankfully, it's been wonderful. I've already had a spell where I wasn't feeling too well, and they brought my meals right to my flat—it was such a relief! I also love the outside space here, and the view from my balcony is lovely.

“Moving into independent living just made sense. My house was far too big for me, and I knew I couldn't keep it up on my own, so it felt good to know another family could enjoy it. The actual move was easy enough. It was a big decision, and I'm so grateful for my family’s support. I'm surprised how quickly I've settled in. The staff are so friendly, and the other residents too. Having two meals a day takes a load off my mind, and that's really helped me to feel at home.

“A typical day here? Well, there are the meals, and I always enjoy a good chat with the others. There's always something going on here. The activities are a good idea, I like joining in when I feel like it. It’s good to have the choice.

“Living here has made me realise that nothing stays the same forever. I've had to be a bit more outgoing and make an effort to talk to people. It's done me good.

“I've made some lovely friends here. One gentleman introduced me to his bowls club and even gives me a lift! It's so lovely to have that connection.

“Looking back, the best thing about moving here has been the company. I was getting so isolated before, and now I see people every day. It’s made a world of difference.”
