Janet moved into Westall House Independent Living in Horsted Keynes in August 2022. She reflects on the journey that led her there and the positive impact it’s had on her life.
“Before moving into independent living, I had a busy and fulfilling life. I worked in building societies and retired when my husband did. We enjoyed looking after our grandchildren and traveling quite a bit, including trips to Canada and Florida with them. We also spent two years living in Devon before settling in Horsted Keynes. After my husband passed away, I moved to a smaller house in Ardingly. I was still driving at that time and actively involved with the WI.
“One of the biggest challenges I faced was deciding to move, a decision I made during the lockdown, though the move itself happened later.
“My decision to move into independent living stemmed from the fact that I always considered it the natural next step after downsizing. I always knew I wanted to move to Westall House, even though it's much bigger now than it was when my husband and I volunteered here. We used to run a weekly shop at the care home at Westall House, and my grandchildren loved visiting.
“The transition to independent living was surprisingly smooth. There weren't really any surprises. It was a relief to finally move, especially after living alone for 20 years, and particularly during lockdown. My house in Ardingly was at the bottom of a hill, and I had to walk uphill just to get to the shops. Moving to Westall House was much easier, as it was when the independent living first opened, and I already knew some of the residents and staff in the adjoining care home.
“A typical day for me here is quite full. I enjoy all of it because I make sure to keep busy and participate in most of the activities provided. It's wonderful to have so much to do.
“Living here has definitely improved my physical and mental wellbeing. It's so nice to always have someone to talk to. The activities and walking around inside and in the gardens also provide plenty of physical exercise.
“I've made some wonderful connections since moving in. One particularly special one is a lady I used to serve at the Building Society back in 1977! She was a staff member at Westall House and now lives in the adjoining care home. There are also some staff members who still work here that I knew from when I volunteered. One of them is now a Wellbeing Assistant in Independent Living.
“I participate in nearly all the activities and programs offered, and they enrich my life immensely. They keep me going, both physically and mentally, because of the social interaction.
“If someone was considering moving to independent living but felt hesitant, I would tell them to just do it. Give it a go! You might be surprised at how much you enjoy it.
“Looking back, the biggest benefit and positive change for me since moving into independent living has been the tremendous difference from being alone all day - and not having to cook anymore is a huge plus!”
