Horsted Keynes' Westall House hosted a colourful "Rainbow Westival" on 4th August, a Pride-themed festival filled with music, entertainment, and family-friendly activities. The event was a resounding success, drawing attendees of all ages to the home.
The festival featured a diverse lineup of entertainers, including drag queen Tuppence A Bag, the women's vocal group Vox, and singing magician Marco. Residents also showcased their talents, with performances from musician John McDevitt, the Weald Ukelele Players and Singers and other local musicians.
Deirdre, a Westall House resident who has lived in Horsted Keynes all her life, said, “It was a wonderful day and I loved the variety of entertainment, especially the Drag Queen. His voice was amazing and I loved his dress!”
At the festival there was plenty of family-friendly fun with a bouncy castle, face painting, and various games. Colourful decorations and a fun colour run added to the enjoyment of the day. There were also creative stalls where visitors could make their own bracelets or floral headbands, or guess the name of a sloth.
Residents and guests alike expressed their enthusiasm for the event. Marjorie said, "It was the best day ever!" while 104-year-old Edna Hathaway added, "I've never been to a festival, so it was lovely having one in my own garden!"
The event was fortunate to have beautiful weather, and there was plenty of food and drink available, including the classic Pimm's and lemonade.
One guest, Liz Bell, commented on the wonderful atmosphere: "I sat in the sunshine with a Pimm's and lemonade watching and listening to amazing, talented entertainers all day. What a unique care home Westall House is, and how lovely for the residents to have an event like this organised for them. They all looked so happy, obviously enjoying the day."
The Westall House residents themselves played a significant role in making the event a success. They decorated the house and grounds with colourful decorations and glitter, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Lynn Mayfield, Activities Coordinator at Westall House, thanked everyone for their help in making the Rainbow Westival a success. She said, "It was a great day for everyone who came, and it was wonderful to see so many people enjoying themselves."
