As part of our team of carers, you’ll draw on your dedication and compassion to make sure each resident receives the quality care they deserve. We have opportunities for people at all levels, whether you’re new to care or you’re highly experienced.

What will I do as a carer?

Carers are one of the most essential roles in our homes. As a carer at Abbeyfield, you have the chance to make a real difference to our residents by putting them first; making sure their happiness, safety and comfort is at the forefront.

Becoming a carer is such a rewarding career, as in many instances carers and residents become almost like family; the support you provide is appreciated more than you will probably ever know! You will be looking after diverse, incredible people with fascinating life stories. These people deserve to be supported by someone who can share this chapter in their life and make a real difference, whilst ensuring our residents lead dignified and fulfilled lives.

Your role as a carer will include supporting residents in our homes with daily activities such as washing, dressing and mealtimes. You’ll take the time to get to know each individual, listening to their stories and preferences to make them feel comfortable and happy. Building relationships with our residents is just as important as the quality of care.

Working as part of a team, you'll be there from that first greeting, or welcoming cup of tea with a favourite biscuit, to ensure our residents feel loved and cared for.

What do I need to be a carer?

Ideally you’ll have a background in care or a similar environment, and a L2 or equivalent qualification in Health & Social Care, or be willing to work towards this during the initial stages of your career.

Equally, you’ll be a warm, caring and sociable person who can converse easily with people and put them at ease. So if you’re caring and compassionate and like to have a positive impact on people's lives, then working as a Care Assistant for Abbeyfield could be the right role for you.

Some of our best carers originally joined us as General Assistants to gain the necessary experience and confidence. If you feel that you'd like to gain some experience before becoming a Care Assistant, search our General Assistant roles as the first step on your career journey.

What other job opportunities are there for me as a carer?

Our best carers who show team leadership skills progress to a more senior Care Team Leader role, where you will have responsibility for supervising carers and general assistants on an entire shift, and important duties such as administering care plans and issuing medication.  Our senior carers have a L3 qualification in Health or Social Care, and our very best senior carers can then progress to Deputy and Registered General Care Home Manager positions.

How do I progress?

At Abbeyfield we value contribution and commitment, and like to reward individuals who work hard to gain experience and skills. As such, we offer career progression within the role. Most individuals with less than 12 months experience as a carer join us at the Foundation level.

If you work hard to gain the knowledge and skills necessary you can progress to Practitioner level within 12 months (sometimes quicker), and in return for this promotion within role you will receive an increase in your hourly rate.

Our very best and highly experienced carers can expect to progress to the Expert level, where your pay will be enhanced further, in return for mentoring other staff and deputising for more senior colleagues.
